Prep for Toy Workshop (6-8-2024)

 Prepare giraffe giveaways for the 5K Run coming up in September 2024.


Cut dowels to length for block bags (7" and 3.5" for 40 bags).  Cut 200 at 7" and 200 at 3.5".  Will roundover the ends at the next workshop.

Toy Workshop (TWS2024-10) 5.25.2024

 We held our tenth Toy Workshop (TWS) for 2024 on Saturday May 25, 2024, from 9:00 to 12:00 am.  This was held at the Wood Shop at 910 Wood Ave in Rapid City.  The shop is in the basement of the annex to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.

It was a beautiful day with the temperature near 70 degrees.  We worked inside today handsanding, drilling and cutting and outside sanding, cutting and routering.   

The attendees at today's workshop (24) included Keith, Lon, Ken, Cleon, Lauree, Darwin, Al, Don, Jerry, Patsy, Dee, Kathie and Bob, Stu, Russ, Gary, Roy,  Jim Burk, John, Dee, Mary Jo, Jim Brown, Maggie. and Rick.

Keith is certified on the small trim router on a table to round over the ends of dowels for logs and block bags.  It is an easy trick that can be used for many applications.  Ask Keith to demonstrate how it is done.

Prep for TWS 5.25.2024

 Our next Toy Workshop is Saturday May 25, 2024.

Preparations included sealing toys, making logs for log trucks, making patterns for new 4" long Mini Locomotive (new part number is #9.5), tracing mini locomotives, cutting blanks for Chalk boards, and preparing small router to round over the ends of logs.

Wood Recovery Efforts 5.16 thru 5.17.2024

Wood Donations from Custer were received by Rick and Al on May 16, 2024.  The high quality wood donations were picked up from Virl Scheibe's shop on Thursday and brought to the Wood Shop  for storage.  Bob and Kathie met them at 2:30 pm to assist with the unloading.

Jerry, Bob and Kathie met Al and Rick at 10 am today to pickup more wood cutoffs,  some spalted maple 2x material, a flitch of Russian olive tree from the ditch in eastern South Dakota, and some sheet goods.  Total effort brought in three truck loads of material.

RCWA Meeting Minutes

Introductions/ New Members:

 Welcome to Joseph Allen as a new member.  Joseph does quite a bit of work with computers and has some ideas for updating our website. 


Treasurer’s Report: 

RCWA $75 collected for dues, $125 for outside donations, $117.66 from ebay tool sales, and $1,541.00 ($1,391 net) from the wood show.  Bob was reimbursed $145 for craft parts.  $150 was reimbursed for wood show change.  In addition, the May-July utility fee of $125 was paid.   We earned $0.90 interest in the workshop account and $0.02 in the savings accounts.  Current balances follow.

Wood Show

The wood show brought in $1,391 net.  Of this, $331 came from raffles, $760 came from the silent auction, and the remainder came through donations to the club.

 

71 names were cut by club members, which was also responsible for a number of the club donations.

 

            As a reminder for next year, we should be saving the sign-in slips.

 

Shop Tours

 

Al Oines reported no shop tours or events are scheduled for May, although the wood turners interest group met in West Hills Wood Shop this month.   

 

A shop tour at Larry Kellogg’s is scheduled for  June 12, 1:00, in Spearfish.  Bob will send out a map at a later date. 

 

Special Interest Groups

 

Next Scroll Saw SIG is scheduled for June 20th tentatively at Rick Weisbeck’s home (6704 Kimberly Drive, Blackhawk) from 1:00-3:00 p.m.

 

Turning SIG is scheduled for May 29 1:00-3:00 will be held at West Hills Village wood shop.

 

General Meeting

Next general meeting will be June 10, 2024 at 7:00 p.m.  Note that we are returning to Monday evenings for the summer operations.  Tony will bring refreshments.


Other Topics

Black Hills Battles is scheduled for Sept. 14 at old Story Book Island.  Stu will have 54 giraffes ready for the event.  The club has worked on a number of giraffes for the battle as well. 

Boys Club Pinewood Derby help, July 8, 9, 10.  Carrie is the point of contact along with Tanner Tucker. 

Tool sale will be June 15. Because of demographic changes, there is no parking at Wes’s.  So, we are looking for a new location for the tool sale.  If an item goes to the club, mark it with 99.  Tony will total sales for each unique ID number, save 10% for the club and the remainder to the individual.  Tools are most welcome but other items can be brought for the sale as well.
