Toy Workshop 7-29-2017

A toy workshop was held on July 29, 2017 at the shop at the CLUB FOR BOYS.  The temperature was again in the high 90s, allowing us to use routers and sanders and sun screen outside.

Attendees (19):  Al Oines, Ed Pike, Danny and Mary Green, Bob and Kathie Buchanan, Julian Wigen, Paul Douglas, Bel Felix, Rick Weisbeck, Richard Rasmussen, Mary Jo Anderson, Ken Maron, Gerald Norsen, Harley Schmadeke, Don Roberts, Frank DiCesare, and Darwin and Lauree.

Activities:
   Critters - sand and routered with trim routers
   Sanding - toys with Rigid Sander
   Routering - edges of toys with roundover bits
   Sanding - toys by hand after sealed
   Scroll sawing - critters and windows in Vans
   Installing wheels on toys
   Inventory of completed toys:  count/label/record/box up

RCWA Members assist CFB with Pinewood Derby - Week of July 17, 2017

During the past week, members of the RCWA assisted over 100 boys at the Club for Boys with building wooden cars for the upcoming Pinewood Derby to be held next week at Erickson Building at The Club for Boys in Rapid City, SD.  The races will be held next Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday (July 25-27th) at 1 pm each day.  (The Erickson Building is the former CFB Thrift Store across from the Journey Museum.)

Members assisting included:  Jerry Hood, Al Oines, Paul Douglas, Ralph Brethauer, and Kathie and Bob Buchanan.  Danny Green hole-sawed over 800 wheels that were to be used for the build.

A Community Event -- A Day in the Park. July 15, 2017

July 15th from 8:30 am- 12:30 pm

Day in the Park (Steve Selfridge),

Memorial Park, Rapid City, SD

Setup at 8:30; event runs from 9:30

to 12:30 pm

Attendees (15):  Harley Schmadeke, Ken Maron, Rick Weisbeck, Al Oines, Julian Wigen, Ralph Brethauer, Frank DiCesare, Ed Pike, Bel Felix, Danny Green, Paul Douglas, Jerry Nordine, Bob and Kathie Buchanan, and Lon Gose.

An enjoyable day at the park today - kids colored over 85 vans, and we put wheels on them.  The shade was great, the crowds were smaller than previous visits, but the addition of the race track made the event a big hit for kids! 

Our booth featured Woodworking for Kids:  We brought blank unfinished wooden toy vans for kids to color with crayons.  When the kids were finished coloring, we installed wheels on each toy.  We brought blank vans, wheels, axles, and glue, wheel presses, jigs and crayons.  Danny Green brought the 3-track racer for the kids to test out their cars after coloring.

A toy workshop was held on July 8, 2017 at the shop at the CLUB FOR BOYS.  The temperature was in the high 90s, allowing us to use routers and sanders and sun screen outside.

Attendees (19):  Al Oines, Ed Pike, Danny and Mary Green, Bob and Kathie Buchanan, Lon Gose, Paul Douglas, Rick Weisbeck, Mary Jo Anderson, Ralph Brethauer, Rollie Lynde, Ken Moran, Jerry Hood, Gerold N, Harley Schmadeke, Matt and Megan Buchanan, and Mark Kline

Activities:
Preparation for the Day in the Park Event on July 15, 2017:  We will bring blank unfinished wooden toy vans for kids to color with crayons. When the kids are finished coloring, we will install wheels on each toy.  A race track will be available to test the new cars.

Today the GAV Product Line was busy fabricating the blanks, also known as Give Away Vans (GAVs):  This included Drilling windows and axles/Router edges and sanding approximately 250 GAVs for the upcoming event.

Other Toy Program Activities today included:
   Helicopters - rotors installation
   Sanding - toys by hand after sealed
   Scroll sawing windows in Vans
   Installing wheels on toys
   Inventory of completed toys:  count/label/record/box up
