Preparation for TWS - Wood Stock
A large pallet of 2" x12" x14 " scrap cutoffs was donated to us by Forest Products on Thursday. Darwin brought it from Forest Products to Magnum Enterprises. Rick picked it up from Magnum Enterprises and brought it to our Wood Shop. The pallet was estimated to hold about 500 pieces.
Templates are prepared and ready for tracing activity.
We held our first Toy Workshop (TWS) for 2023 on Saturday January 14, 2023, from 9 to 11:30 am. This was held at the Wood Shop at 910 Wood Ave in Rapid City. The shop is in the basement of the annex to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.
The attendees at today's workshop (17) included John, Nick, Harley, Bob, Kathie, Rick, Grant, Rollie, Lon, Ken, Dennis, Russ, Tony, Paul, Darwin, Lauree and Don.
We are starting a new year of Toy Making, and therefore are starting with Phase 1 - Tracing. So today's plan was to trace Toy Patterns onto 2" thick wood, then cut the traced toys into individual pieces with the miter saw or the band saw. Lastly we put all toys of one kind into a box, and moved the boxes to the Work In Progress (WIP) store room. Next workshop, we can begin working on the next phases: Cutting and Milling.
We moved ahead to Phase 2 for Love bugs that had been traced last month by cutting them to shape using the scrollsaw.
Our goal for 2023 is to build about 3,000 toys to donate to organizations who work with kids in South Dakota.
Results of Today's Toymaking Efforts:
Patterns traced: 17
Total toys traced: 441
More to come: we will be tracing for the next four workshops, as well as starting the cutting and milling. That is, we will start phase 2 - 3 - 4 next time on the toys traced today.
Paul is our official "peg painter". So today, Bob gave Paul 6 bags of axle pegs for painting. Each bag holds 1,000 pegs. The peg color for 2023 will be RED. Samples are in work.
