Bears:  Ken brought back a box cut to shape, sanded, routered, ready to be sealed.
Thin Animal Toys - John Wolf  cut, drilled, sanded, routered, and returned to Rick for wheels and finish.
A large number of toy blanks and critters were taken home for working in individual shops.

All Toy Program boxes were moved from Storage area in back of CFB including routers and carts.  The pinewood derby blank race cars were left in the Storage Room (about 5 boxes).

Updates, Cancellations, Postponements, Etc for RCWA

Out of an abundance of caution, given the gravity of the rapidly spreading corona virus pandemic, the RCWA is modifying some of its upcoming events:

The SS SIG scheduled for Thursday 19 March 2020 at Rick's Shop is cancelled.

The Toy Workshop for 21 March 2020 at the CFB from 9 to noon is modified from a workshop to an exchange from 10 am to 10:30 am.  If you have items to bring in, or want to pick up items to work on at home, please come to the Club for Boys Shop between 10 am to 10:30 am on Saturday morning.  I have several items that can be taken home for hand sanding (pickup trucks, busses and oldies); lots of toys for RIGID or belt sanding, drilling and routering; blocks to sand; chalkboard handles to cut; critters to cut; lots of toys to cut; tugboat hulls to sand and drill, etc.  If you are unable to work at home or at a friend's shop, you probably can skip this event. 

The next workshop (May 28th) will probably also be an exchange.  More details will be released prior to that event.

The 12th annual Woodworking Show scheduled for Saturday 18 April 2020 from 8 am to 4 pm at the Knecht Home Center is postponed.  Rick will be working with personnel at Knecht's to select a new date, probably in the late May or June time frame.  So if you haven't quite finished your "Anything that Flies" projects, you will have a little more time.

I will keep you updated as things change in the upcoming weeks.

St. Martins Village SHOP TOUR - postponed to a later date

The SHOP TOUR of St  Martin's Village Shop was scheduled for March 21st, 2020.  However, due to new restrictions on the facility, it is postponed and will be scheduled at a later date.  Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause you.

Wood Turning Special Interest Group (WT SIG) 3-7-2020

A new special interest group was started this month (3-7-2020).  It is referred to as the Wood Turning Special Interest Group (WT SIG).  It is open to all members and guests, and is tentatively planned to be held the First Saturday of each Month at 10 am.  It is held in Danny and Mary’s Shop at 8850 Schroeder Rd, Rapid City, SD  57702.  Danny’s cell number is (605) 389-8987.

Several members (17) attended the premier meeting of the WT SIG, as evidenced by the photos.  Attendees included Keith, Danny, Mary, Ken, Carol, Rick, Cori, Grant, Bob, Jerry, Rex, Lon, Al, Richard, Ed, Lukasz, and Julian.

Pinewood Derby Build Assist 2-28-2020 and 2-29-2020

On Friday evening, Feb 28, 2020, about 5:30 pm, Rick, Danny, Bob and Kathie attended a Pinewood Derby Building exercise at the First Assembly of God church on Mt Rushmore Road to provide toymaking expertise.  Members of a Ranger group from the church met to prepare for the upcoming Derby on March 7, 2020.  The car must meet certain requirements in order to be eligible for the races, included weight restrictions (5.5 oz max).  Hot lead was the additional weight of choice.

We brought two Rigid sanders, a drill press, and three DEWALT scrollsaws.  We had enough firepower to build several fleets of derby cars.  Somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 cars were built over the two day session.  Highlights included a Banana Car, a Tank, a Toy Box car, and a slingshot design.
