Toymaking Marathon Begins (TWS2021-13) 9-4-2021

Attending (15):  Tony, Ken, Rick, Al, Don, Frank, John, Jerry, Patsy, Rollie, Norma, Dennis, Cori, Bob, Kathie.

A perfect weather day to kick off our Toy making Marathon which will run until we finish all toys that we started in January 2021.  We will distribute toys on Saturday Dec 4, 2021.

At the conclusion  of the workshop today, we paused to celebrate Rollie's 90th birthday.  Congratulations Rollie and Happy Birthday!!!

We met at the Shop on Wood Ave today officially for the first time.  Several members have been working on the facility since early August.  Efforts included drywalling  two walls of the Store Room, building shelving units to hold Finished toys and Toys that are in Work.  Work is continuing on building several small work stations  (4' X 2') for using with Drill Presses and small vises.  Sawdust collection for drill presses is one of our first needed accessories.  Rollie is coming up with a prototype design.  A table for using scroll saws will be needed in the near future.

Preparation for Toy Making Marathon 9-3-2021

In preparation for our first Workshop at the Shop on Wood Ave, Mary Jo and Kathie spent a half day Thursday sanding a large group of toys to remove sharp edges resulting from spraying them with a water based polyurethane finish.  The polyurethane is less toxic and less expensive than "spray-can" lacquer, so it's better for the environment, safer and easier on the person doing the spraying, easier on the budget, and looks as good as high gloss lacquer on light colored wood.  But it does sometimes raise the grain on the edges of the wood, so may require some hand sanding before installing wheels.

So to get a little head start on the wheel installing operation, time was well spent by Mary Jo and Kathie on the day before.  Thank you Mary Jo and Kathie!
