It was a beautiful day with the temperature at 85 degrees.  We worked inside today handsanding, drilling and cutting and outside sanding, cutting and routering.

Activities today:

Gary Graves brought in mini- helicopters, ready for routering and drilling rotor holes.  He also brought in finished ICU items.  Ed brought in blank chalk boards with handle holes.  Jerry cut handles last workshop.  So a total of 62 chalkboard blanks with handles cut were passed off to Gary for further processing.

Cleon continued in the role of Tugboat Captain today.  Cabins  were sanded and routered today by the "outside sanders".  Smoke stacks were drilled by Cleon and Keith.  Several hulls need to be drilled, cut, sanded and routered.  Cleon is working on the hulls at home cutting them to shape on the scrollsaw.

Sealed toys were hand sanded today in preparation for the final spraying.  Toy blanks were cut to shape on scroll saws.  Blanks for CFB were sanded and drilled today to be ready by July 8th.  Tugboat cabins were sanded and routered.

Toy movement:

Lon brought in three boxes of toys ready to be sealed, and brought more home to work on.  Ed brought in two boxes of toys cut to shape.  He took home three more to work on.  Bob brought in tugboat stack stock to be drilled.

Tool Sale. 6.15.2024

Today we held our Annual Tool Sale.  This was a fundraiser to support the Toy Program.

The day was predicted to be in the low 90's, the hottest day of the year so far, with clear skies in the morning and wind after noon.

Members had been bringing in items for the sale for the last month.  Friday afternoon at 3 pm we opened the Wood Shop for members to bring items by.  We also had some donated items which we sorted and labeled on Friday afternoon. The sale was held in the parking lot at 910 Wood Ave next to the Wood Shop where we build toys for the Toy Program.

On Saturday morning, members led by Rick moved and set up tables in the wee early hours so that items could be put in place on tables at 7:00 am in preparation for the 7:30 am sale start.  We used at least 15 tables plus 4 pieces of 2' x 8' plywood and 8 saw horses.  Tony handled the cash box and Cori recorded every transaction, allocated to member ID numbers or to the group (#99).

Kathie and Lauree set up coffee, cookies, banana bread, lemon bars, pumpkin scones, and ice tea in the meeting room in the annex.  Grant brought in a cooler filled with ice and water.  Kathie made lunch for all  -  pulled pork sandwiches, chips, grapes, apples, and cheesesticks.

Attendees (18):   Joseph Allen, Bob Buchanan, Kathie Buchanan, Al Oines, Nick Spano, Harley Schmadeke, Ed Pike,  Lon Gose, Bob A, Cori, Josh, Darwin, Lauree, Grant, Mary, Rick, Tony Verchio and Stu Kellogg.

Here are photos of some of the items offered up for sale:

Traffic started to trickle down about two pm, so we began to clean up.  We sorted and organized the remaining items, taking some items to thrift stores, some to Restore and some to recycle.  We had all the canopies down, tables moved back, and items allocated by 3 pm.  The Tool Sale for 2024 was over.  Tony is still counting, but we believe the sale was a success.  Thank you to all who helped make this happen!

Shop Tour 6.12.2024. Larry and Druce Kellogg

Members carpooled to Spearfish, SD, on Wednesday June 12, 2024 to visit Larry and Druce Kelloggs for a shop tour and wood turning demonstration.  Attendees included Al, Nick, Larry, Druce, Kathie and Bob.

Larry and Druce are members of the Northern Hills Woodworking Guild of Spearfish which focusses on woodturning.  Larry, a retired logger, has a small portable sawmill, which he has used to cut several walnut logs for us in the past.  He is considering putting the sawmill on the market.

Larry put together an interesting demo showing us how to make a small pendant type key holder with a stainless steel ring and a piece of hardwood.  He is still using his small precision lathe which he purchased at the BHSC Art Department auction held in 2008.  It has been a major workhorse in his shop.

Here's a few photos from the tour.
