Toy Workshop (TWS2023-15) 9.16.2023

Today we began our Toy Making Marathon.  We will meet each weekend until we finish all toys for 2023.  We will pack and distribute all toys on December 2, 2023.

We held our fifteenth Toy Workshop (TWS) for 2023 on Saturday September 16 2023, from 9 am to 12.  This was held at the Wood Shop at 910 Wood Ave in Rapid City.  The shop is in the basement of the annex to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.  

Attendees (20) included Lon, Ed, Ken, Jerry, Patsy, Kathie, Bob, Grant, Jim Brown, Mary Jo, Julian, Harley, Nick, Darwin, Lauree, Rick, John, Denni, Gary,  and Stu.

Today's Activities: 

Here was the plan for the day:

Tasks handled today included cutting toys to shape using scrollsaws.  Ed and Darwin and Jerry cut critters and hippos.

John, Harley, Julian, Grant and Nick put wheels on numerous toys.  Wheeled vehicles included locomotives, Puppy Dogs, Racers with drivers,  airplanes, and a bus.  We used the last peg of the first 6,000 run today.  Paul Douglas will be painting the next 3,000 pegs this week.

Nick built more airplanes today by attaching the wing to the fuselage of several more planes.

Kathie, Patsy and Mary Jo hand sanded a large number of toys, moving them on to the spraying area at Bob's shop.  Turtle Banks are ready for plexiglass windows and were given to Rick.  Ladders are ready to be attached to firetrucks.   Batman racers, Jeeps, Helicopters, Lightning McQueen racers, Paddle Games, and a box off blocks.are all ready for the next step.  

Ken, Rick, Lon, and Stu worked on toys outside - routering and sanding the edges of toys. Lauree expedited the flow of toys around the production line today.  

Grant and Jim Brown explored the world of braided string and 1" wooden balls related to paddle games, cup and ball games, and basket ball games.  Their goal is 200 string and ball subassemblies..

As a result of all previous activities this year with cutting and drilling, we are currently rough sanding, routering of edges, and finish sanding.   Only a couple of boxes of critters are available for cutting to shape.

After today, there are five boxes of toys ready for finish spraying. Four boxes of toys are ready to be sealed.

RCWA Meeting Minutes

Introductions:  No new introductions tonight. 

Treasurer’s Report: 

Donations from the threshing bee and panel saw sale of $200.  Tool sale distribution and personal expense reimbursement amounted to $393.30.  Current balances are

Maintenance fee is due.  This is a utility fee of $125 per quarter.  Insurance will also be coming due in October. 

Shop Tours:  No announcements on new shop tours at the present time.

            Next Scroll Saw SIG is this Sept. 21 at Rick Weisbeck from 1:00-3:00

Turning SIG Sept. 27 1:00-3:00 at Brown’s.  Turning will include a demonstration by Al Oines on inside out turning.    Attendees will be given a set of blanks ready for inside out ornaments.  

Threshing Bee

We gave 100 tractors and about 30 vans away.  Helping with the event were Bob and Kathie Buchanen, Jerry and Patsy Hood, Darwin and Lauree Buus, Lon Gose, Rollie and Norma Lynde,  Rick Weisbeck and friends, Al Oines, Stu Kellogg, Nick Spano and what seemed like the whole Schmadeke clan. 

Little Black Hills Battles

Little Black Hills Battles is set for September 9 at Old Story Book Island.  We ended up with 12 people helping with the event.  We gave about 45 giraffes away plus a number of love bugs and one van. 

Announcements

We moved everything from Mary’s barn; we brought two trailers of wood plus one trailer with 6 shelves to store at Bob’s.  All Wood Show materials are stored at the basement of the church. 

Rick has replaced a train for one of the display cases ( @ mall) but we would like to put in a few new toys in the display cases. 

Toy program

Toy workshops are set for September 16 and September 23.  We will continue workshops every Saturday until December or until toys are finished. 

The count for completely finished toys is 966.  We have about 400 toys left from last year.  With what is planned, we will likely deliver around 3,500 toys this year. 

Airplanes are close to completion but are missing wings.  They are probably made and are just being finished.  Airplanes - we have 150 planned and current count is 84. 

Cradles 10 big ones and 13 small ones are done.  12 small cradles are still being worked on.  Cradles are under control and should be finished in next two weeks.

Cup and ball games are 90% done.  They just need strings assembled.

Paddle games need to be sanded and routed. 

Ring toss handles are done.

We have 50 turtle banks. 

There are tons of tops; 17 tops from Colorado in addition to tops Dave Maude makes.

Jewelry boxes count is 42.  The single heart and double heart boxes Keith is working on.  We have planned 85 total jewelry boxes.

Critter bags – we are planning 100 bags with about 10 critters per bag.  We have a bunch of critters done, but we need to bag em.  1 and a half boxes of critters still need to be cut. 

Darwin captured 6 barrels of ¾ inch scraps of wood.  They will also donate 2 pallets of 2 x 4 material.  Lauree brought 10 boxes of 1 x 3 stock which is out at Bob’s. 

Locomotives are all done waiting to be sprayed. 

Helicopters we have planned 225.  We currently have about 35.  Fire trucks 56 out of 60 are done. 

Blocks need some work.  We plan to have 40 bags of blocks. 

MISC

RCWA potluck picnic is September 23, 4:00-7:00.  Potluck is at Bob Buchanan’s house.  Sign up for deserts and salads. 

Next RCWA meeting is Oct. 9, 2023.

Rick Weisbeck displayed an elephant and 3 human/dog interactions completed with a scroll saw.

Stu Kellogg talked about wine bottle stoppers and an off set turning jig from Niles Stoppers.
