Parts Fabrication: Helos, Airplanes, Tugboats, Chalk Boards, Basketball Games

Most of the toys made for the Toy Program in the Rapid City Woodworkers Association consist of one main part supported by axles and pegs.  But some of the toys have as many as 8 parts.  The complexity level of each toy is multiplied by each additional part.  Each additional part must be made separately before final assembly.  Here is where some of those parts are fabricated.

Parts for Helicopters

Rotors for helicopters are made by Rick using a CNC router.

Parts for Basketball games

Basketball hoops were made by Jim and Dick at J&D Wood Works in Black Hawk, SD from 2008 thru 2022, using their big bed CNC router on 5' x 5 ' Russian birch plywood.    In 2022, Stu Kellogg did a test run on his CNC router and made 36 hoops. This year, Stu fired up his machine again and made what we need for 2023 (100).

Parts for Airplanes

Airplanes consist of a fuselage, a wing, and two wheels.   Rick traces the fuselage on 1" thick poplar and cuts them to shape on his scroll saw (s).  Bob cuts the wings from 1/4" pine when available.  He cut the strips to width, routers a 1/8" roundover on the long sides, then cuts each strip to length.  Then he routers the ends and corners of each wing.  The edges are then hand sanded before finishing.

Parts for Chalk Boards

Chalk boards are made by Gary and Pat Graves.   The board is first cut to width, then to length, then the handle hole is traced onto the board.  The hole is cut out using scroll saws.  Then Gary sands the board, and the corners and routers the edges of the board and handle.  Then Pat takes over, and adds chalk paint, and cutsies.

Parts for Tugboats

Tugboat are made up of the hull, and a cabin and tieoffs.  The hulls are traced on 3/4" shock, cut to shape on bandsaw or scroll saws, routered and sanded.  The cabins are made of two pieces of wood, glued and pinned together.  Then they are drilled to accept the 1" poplar dowel stack.  Then the cabin is screwed and glued to the hull.  The stack is then glued in place.   Lastly before sealing and finishing, the two tie offs ate installed.

Parts for Rocking Chairs and Cradles

Some parts for the Rocking Chairs and Cradles are cut using Scroll Saws and some parts are made using the CNC router.
