Toy Workshop (TWS2024-19) 10-5-2024

We held our nineteenth Toy Workshop (TWS) for 2024 on Saturday Oct 5, 2024, from 9:00 to 12:00 am.  This was held at the Wood Shop at 910 Wood Ave in Rapid City.  The shop is in the basement of the annex to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.

Today was a nice cool day with lots of wind.  Today we expected 68 degrees.  We worked inside today handsanding, scroll sawing toys, installing regular wheels and rotors, and drilling axle holes.  Those working outside were sanding, cutting, routering, and peg painting.

The attendees at today's workshop (23) included Keith, Al, Rick, Paul, Harley, Bob B, Kathie, Frank, Darwin, Lauree, Dee, Mary Jo, Lon, Nick, Ed, Grant,  Cleon, John, Gary G, Roy, Jim Burk, Russ and Dennis.

Activities today:

Cutting Toys to Shape
Inventory Control
Handsanding lots of toys (including tugboats, etc)
Drilling axle holes in Tater cars
Wheel Installs
Machine Sand toys first time (Puppy dogs, hippos, shark cars, etc)
Spindle sanding of windows
Router edges of toys after first sanding
Bringing in Toys completed at home (Basketball game parts)

Photos from the workshop:

The wheel line expanded to a second table again today.

We were getting low on Green Axle Pegs, so Paul Douglas came today to spray paint more axle pegs. We set up a tent for the painting operation.  Several members helped Paul insert the pegs in the peg spraying fixtures.  Then Paul sprayed the pegs.

The hand sanding group finished lots of toys today including 3 boxes of tugboats, and final wet/dry sanding of toys that were sprayed with a polyurethane finish, plus toys that were sealed with shellac.

Looks like there are eight boxes of toys ready to be sealed with a shellac coating!

And six boxes are ready to be sprayed with a clear coat of polyurethane.

Lon finished sanding and routering and drilling a large box of backboards.  He also finished sanding and drilling a large number of bases.  Ken took them home to install a launcher to each base.  The alignment groove will need to be cut on the new backboards.

Bases with launchers installed (35 + 26 = 61) are ready for the next steps.  We will need to install launchers on 39 more bases.

Hoops (100+) were made by Stu on his CDC router.  Only a small amount of sanding is necessary before installing the hoops on the backboards.  We will start gluing the hoops to the backboards next week.

Frank finished building the small cradles last week.  Kathie is finishing them with a hand rubbed poly finish.  It takes two coats with some sanding in between.

Rick has been working on the parts for Rockers.  He has all the parts made, and he brought them to the workshop today.  Kathie will finish them with a hand rubbed poly finish.  It takes two coats with some sanding in between.  Experience has shown that it is much easier to finish the parts before assembly than after the rockers are assembled.

Rick is also working on the Turtle Banks.  They are cut out and need sanding and routering and plastic circles installed.

The outside crew was grateful for the cooler weather today!  But we couldn't put up the canopy due to the crazy wind today.

Toys packed today and put in inventory:

Total toys in inventory:  1808 + 222  =  2010
