Hills Alive - A Day in the Park - Wooden Toy Preparations

The Hills Alive toy car give-away project involves building 225 wooden toy car blanks.  The blank cars will be colored by the child, then members of the Rapid City Woodworkers Association will install and glue wooden wheels to the cars.  Then the completed cars will be given to the artists.  The event will take place on July 20, 2013 from 9 am to noon at Memorial Park in Rapid City.

This blog describes the operations involved in making the toy cars.

Wood was planed on two sides before fabrication started.  The wood selected had to be at least 21" long.

A prototype was built to test the design.

One end of each 2x4s were then cut to make a clean end.

The sled was used to ensure each piece was the same length.

Each piece was cut to 10 1/8" and makes two blanks for wooden toy cars.

Then the blanks were jointed on two sides.

With the board cut to length, it was cut to the correct 30 degree angle.

This cut made two blanks.

Two blanks from one 10 inch piece.

All pieces are now cut to the proper angle.

Then the tips of the blanks were trimmed to remove the sharp tip.

A sled on the table saw helped make this task easier.

Then all sides of the blank were routed with a roundover bit of 3/16" radius.

A Toy Workshop was held on June 22, 2013 to drill the axles holes, windows, and final sanding in preparation for the July 20th event.
The next step was to drill axles holes (7/32") and window holes (3/4").
Final sanding of the routered edges, the drilled holes, and windows was then done.
The edges of the windows must be rounded-over as the final operation.  With windows smooth, a gift stamp will be placed on the bottom on the toy.
