Support of YFS Fundraiser/Silent Auction (8-7-2022)

Susan from YFS asked on June 24th,  2022, if we might be able to support their silent auction with a train set.

"Youth & Family Services has our Dinner Theatre on August 7 & 8th.  This is one of our largest money making events to keep our programs up .  We were visiting in a meeting and wondered if your club would be interested (or if it’s possible) in making a train for our auction.  We have found out that play sets are amazing fund raisers for us and when we started talking about it, RC Woodworkers name came up.  I know it’s short notice and I apologize for that.  Let me know what your thoughts are."

Susan Jorgensen, Donor and Volunteer Engagement Coordinator, Youth & Family Services

Rick decided that he could finish a train set by the auction time in August so started working up a set.  The first set (made predominantly of walnut, cherry, and oak hardwoods) was made by Rick and finished by Kathie.  (The second set (smaller and made from various softwoods) was an anonymous gift to the RCWA a couple of years ago.)

Good Job Rick and Kathie!

The trains were delivered to Plaza YFS today August 2, 2022 to Susan Jorgensen.

Toy Workshop (TWS2022-12) 7.23.2022

We held our 12th Toy Workshop (TWS) for 2022 on Saturday July 23,  2022, from 9 to noon.  This was held at the Wood Shop at 910 Wood Ave in Rapid City.  The shop is in the basement of the annex to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.

The attendees at today's workshop (16) included Grant, Ken, Harley, Bob, Kathie, Jerry, Patsy, Jim Burk, Julian, John, Rollie, Stu, Russ, Nick, Tony and Rick.

John and Jerry brought in boxes of toys they cut, sanded, and drilled in their home workshops.

Today we worked primarily on Tractors for the Sturgis Threshing Bee.  This included cutting, sanding, routering, and drilling.  We completed more than 44 tractors from scratch and sanding and routering the 44 tractors that we cut to shape on Thursday at the SS SIG.

Today we drilled rotor/axle holes, drilling holes for strings in wooden balls, tracing Love Bugs, and cutting toys to rough shape.  There were three people cutting on scrollsaws, and one on the bandsaw.  There was three members handsanding 2 boxes of toys that had been sealed with shellac.  Wheels were installed on 42 toys plus on 118 Love Bugs.    There was power sanding and round over routering outside in 85 + degree weather.

Several members took home traced toys to work on at home shops.  This included Keith Brinks, Lon and Ken.

At the end of the day, there was 1box of toys ready to be sealed and three boxes ready to finish sprayed.

There were  76 toys sporting the new orange pegs selected for all 2022 toys, and 50 finished Topic s made by Dave Maude.  3 boxes of Love Bugs were traced.

An additional 50 Love Bugs were requested by the Rapid City Fire Department.

We did some housekeeping at the previous workshop by moving all Work in Progress (WIP) toys to the room adjacent to our current tool store room.  Already we are seeing a major reduction in the log jambs in the tool storage room.

Community Event 7.16.2022 5K Walk Little Black Hills Battles

With temperatures in the high 90's, several members of the RCWA gathered at Old Story Book Island Park today to support the Little Black Hills Battles at Monument Pediatrics.  This is a  fundraiser to assist young people and their parents battling diseases at Monument Pediatrics.

Attendees included Rick, Patsy, Jerry, Stu, Bob, Kathie, Matt, Mary G, Lauree and Darwin.

Giraffes were designed and tested by Jerry.  The giraffes were traced by Jerry on 1" poplar.  Some (16) were cut at the SS SIG in June.  The rest were cut and routered by Jerry.  Thanks Jerry!

Patsy, Kathie and Matt assisted the little folks with the coloring of giraffes or vans.  Jerry and Stu glued and installed wheels.  Lauree, Darwin and Mary G helped the little folks test out and race their vehicles of choice.  Over 39 giraffes were colored by kids of all ages ranging from a few months to teens.  Ten vans were colored, wheeled and raced.  Many parents and lots of kids were very excited about the wooden toys today!

We were asked by the coordinator of the event to please come again next year!
