Tool Sale - Garage Sale Fundraiser 6.18.2022 (updated)

Friday June 17, 2022

Jim Burk delivered tables borrowed from the Rapid Valley Fire Station before 2 pm on Friday.  Other preliminary activities started at 2 pm on Friday as a few guys met Mary Green and Rick and Ron and his trailer  at Mary Green's RV barn to load several items donated from community people for the tool sale.  Then we caravanned to Wes Murphy's to unload radial arm saws, scroll saws and lots of hand tools.   Rick also unloaded tools from Dave Maude.  At 3 pm, Rollie and Norma arrived with a trailer full of items gleaned from Rollie's 55 year tool collection.  The crew quickly moved oodles of items from Rollie's trailer to Wes's garage.  Then Bob backed his truck into the driveway to unload his sale treasures into the garage for the big sale on Saturday.

Saturday June 18, 2022

Jim Burk and Wes Murphy set up 14 tables in Wes Murphy's driveway early on Saturday morning June 18, 2022.  This set the stage for other members to assist by bringing out tons of items for lots of garage salers eager to take advantage of woodworking tool deals in the early morning hours.  Rick posted signs around the neighborhood at 7:30 pm and the fun began.

Members (22) supporting today's fundraiser included Jim, Wes, Kathy, Rick, Ron, Stu, Tony, Rollie, Norma, Grant, Bob, Kathie, Russ, Ken, Al, Lon, Lauree, Darwin, Harold, Cori, Janet, and Rob.

A perfect day for a garage sale:  It was a hot day starting at 75 degrees at 6:30 am and rising to 97 degrees by 3 pm, with no trace of rain until 4 pm as we were all wrapped up and driving home.

Kathie and Wes once again treated us all to a fantastic lunch with sandwiches, fruit and rhubarb cake dessert!  Thank you so much!

Many thanks also goes to our Publicity chairperson Mary Coffin for tirelessly getting the word out to garage sale goers all around the Black Hills.  Because of Mary's efforts, we were able to move lots of merchandise down the driveway today!

The sale of a Radial Arm Saw has become a tradition at our Tool Sale, and we did sell another one today!

At the conclusion of the sale about 3 pm, tables were loaded into Rick's truck for returning to the Rapid Valley Fire Station.  Items not sold were loaded into Bob's truck for sorting and dispositioning to various locations in Rapid City, including the Restore - Black Hills Habitat for Humanity, and the Cornerstone Thrift Store.

Toy Workshop (TWS2022-09) 6-11-2022

We held our 9th Toy Workshop (TWS) for 2022 on Saturday June 11, 2022, from 9 to noon.  This was held at the Wood Shop at 910 Wood Ave in Rapid City.  The shop is in the basement of the annex to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.

The attendees at today's workshop (22) included Grant, Al, Ken, Rick, Harley, Russ Stueckrath, Bob, Kathie, Jerry, Patsy, Gary Graves, Bel, Jim Burk, Julian, John, Stu, Tony, Lon, Ed, Denni, Bob and Kathie.

Patsy H and Gary G brought in handcrafted cloth bags for critters.  Ed, Ken,  and Lon brought in boxes of toys they cut, sanded, and drilled in their home workshops.

Today we continued drilling axle holes, drilling windows using Forstner bits, cutting toys to rough shape, sanding and routering.  There were three people cutting on scrollsaws, and one on the bandsaw.  There was handsanding of 2  boxes of toys that had been sealed with shellac, as well as handsanding of blocks for block bags.  There was power sanding and round over routering under the canopy outside in 84 degree weather.

Several members took home traced toys to work on at home.  This included Keith Brinks and Ken.  Rick took home a  box of whales to install a reinforcing dowel in the tail before cutting to shape.  Rick installed a lifting arm on the new DeWalt scrollsaw.  Bob shared an auction treasure from the previous Saturday's live aucion.  So, a new tool was added to our inventory today, A slightly used DW788 scroll saw complete with a stand on wheels, with an extension cord and magnifying light.  Rick checked it out and gave it the okay for use.

At the end of the day, there were 4 boxes of toys ready to be sealed and two boxes ready to finish sprayed.  There were 160 toys sporting the new orange pegs selected for all 2022 toys, and placed into inventory as the first group of wheeled toys completed for 2022.

We did some housekeeping today by moving the leftover 2x stock and some 1" critter stock into a small closet under the stairs.  Then we set up tables and saw horses in the small room adjacent to our tool storeroom.  We plan to locate the Work in Process (WIP) items in this room to avoid the log jambs in the tool storage room.  Lastly we setup an 8' heavy duty table in the main work area, replacing a sawhorse-and-plywood work area.
