The Wood Turning Special Interest Group (WT SIG) was held on June 28, 2023.

All RCWA members and guests are welcome to attend.  It is on the calendar for the last Wednesday of each month at 1 pm. It is held in Jim and Maggie’s Shop at 2879 Spotted Fawn Lane, Rapid City, SD 57702.

Thank you to Maggie for hosting and preparing today's Woodturning SIG.

Members (11) attending included Al Oines, Ken,  Maggie, Stu, Bob, Kathie, Dave Stafford, Nick. Harley, Jerry, and Keith.

Today Al demonstrated how to turn wooden pens on the club lathe.  He covered the whole process from cutting and drilling the blanks, inserting and gluing the brass sleeves in the wood blanks, positioning the blanks on the mandrel with sleeves, turning the blanks to shape, finishing the blanks, and assembling the wooden pen.

After the demonstration, Al got Bob and Keith set up on the Club Lathe and Bob's lathe.  Keith turned a slimline pen from cocobola - beautiful - nice job Keith!
Bob turned a pen from ___________.  It was also beautiful!

Everyone enjoyed the demonstration - thanks for the show Al!  Thanks for hosting Maggie!

Toy Workshop (TWS2023-11) 6.24.2023

We held our eleventh Toy Workshop (TWS) for 2023 on a rainy day Saturday June 24, 2023, from 9 am to 12.  This was held at the Wood Shop at 910 Wood Ave in Rapid City.  The shop is in the basement of the annex to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.  This was a regularly scheduled Rapid City Woodworkers Association (RCWA) workshop and held on the fourth Saturday of the month.

Today's Activities:

Activities today included cutting toys to shape using scrollsaws (Ed).  Ed cut tugboat hulls, and critters today.

Harley,  Nick, Lon, Al, and Ken put wheels on numerous toys (80).  This included golf carts, runabouts, and milk vans.

Kathie, Mary Jo, and Lon's granddaughter handsanded a large number of toys, moving them on to the spraying area at Bob's shop.

Lon returned a box of tugboat hulls all cut to shape, routered and sanded.

Ed returned the chalk boards (64) with all handles cut out.  Gary Graves picked up the chalk boards to work at home.  Pat Graves will add the chalkpaint, chalk and cutsies.

Julian completed building 38 jewelry boxes in his shop at West Hills. He returned them today for sealing, sanding and finishing.

Frank returned small cradles today (13), completely assembled and ready for sealing and finishing. He has completed 10 large cradles as well, still at home.  He will need 12 more pairs of small cradle ends for 2023.

Gary brought in a box of beautiful antique tops (17) completed by a friend in Colorado.  They were ready for inventory. Thank you!

Gary returned a box of racers that survived  ICU.  Gary enhanced each with the addition of a large manikin.  These are ready for sealing, sanding, and finishing.  Gary also picked up a few more toys from ICU for rework.

Due to the impending rain, activities outside were stopped about 10:00 am.   Ken, Al, and Lon had been routering and sanding the edges of toys until the dark clouds and thunder suggested we move back inside.

As a result of all previous activities with cutting and drilling, we still have a good backlog of  rough sanding, routering of edges, and finish sanding (with mouse sanders) left to do.   A few boxes of 2" toys + many boxes of critters need to be cut to shape.  There are several boxes of toys ready for finish spraying.

Attendees (13) included Lon, Lon's granddaughter, Al, Gary, Ed, Ken, Kathie, Bob, Nick, Harley, Mary Jo, Julian, and Frank,

Garage/Tool Sale Fundraiser 6.17.2023

Members of the Rapid City Woodworkers Association have been preparing for this  year's Tool Sale to benefit the Toy Program, for at least two months.

Mary Coffin spent the last few weeks posting Tool Sale posters around the Black Hills in places wood workers frequent.  Mary placed ads on TV, in Quick Quarters, etc.  Cori W placed ads on Instagram, Facebook, Craig's List, etc.  Members had been collecting tools and other items to sell at the tool sale, tagging and marking them for a few weeks.

On Wednesday, Al, Rick and Bob went to a home above Canyon Lake to load items donated to the RCWA for the tool sale.  On Wednesday, several members dropped off items at Wes and Kathy Murphy's garage in preparation for the Tool Sale.  On Friday afternoon, Al, Rick and Bob met to mark and tag all the donated items for the Saturday Tool Sale.  Tony and Cori prepared their worksheets to be able to easily record hundreds of transactions that happen at the Tool Sale.

Attending today (20): Grant, Lon, Rick, Cori, Tony, Wes, Kathy, Bob, Kathie, Patsy, Jerry, Stu, Lauree, Darwin, Harley, Nick, Al, Julian, Dave Stafford, Keith,

Customers began arriving before 7:30 am.  Most major sales were made before 9 am.  There was a lull until 11 am but continued slower and steadily until 3 pm.  Starting after 8:30 am, Keith conducted a survey asking customers how they heard about the Tool Sale.  The largest response was "Saw Signs, driving by."

After the sale, Tony will add up all sales for each participant, subtracting the fee, and determine the amount due each participant.  Preliminary numbers:  Total net sales exceeded $1,900.00.

What was left - small items:

At the end of the Tool Sale, we had a few larger items left including two table saws, a lathe, and a small generator.  I called RESTORE, an outlet store for the Black Hills area Habitat, and they said they could use these items.  So, on Tuesday afternoon, Rick, Al, Stu, and Bob loaded the items into Stu's low trailer with a ramp and deliver them to Restore.  Wes's garage is clear again.  Thanks again to Wes and Kathy for hosting our Tool Sale!
