Thank you to Jim and Maggie for hosting a Shop Tour of their new shop and for holding the Woodturning SIG as well.  Your hospitality was very appreciated!

Maggie demonstrated a few turning techniques and Jim gave tours of the shop and their new home.  Other members contributed as well.

Future plans are to setup the club lathe in Brown's shop to provide an  additional opportunity for teaching turning techniques and provide a hands-on experience.

The WT SIG is planned for the last Wednesday of each month at 1 pm at Brown's Shop.  Mark your calendar!

SS SIG 1.19.2023

Members of the RCWA met at Rick's shop today at 1 pm to learn more about the art of scroll sawing.

Members attending today (9) included Jerry, Al, Dave, Rollie, Lon, Ken, Bob, Kathie, and Rick.

Jerry and Rick worked on the barn structure, the animals, and the hay wagon for the Barn project for the silent auction at our April 22, 2023 Woodworking Show.  In October, we found wood and glued up patterns for the hay wagon and the tractor, as well as the horse, cow, and pig.  Wheels and steering wheels were selected as well.  The barn structure fit was refined and the animals and wagon were cut to size.

.

Jerry prepared a step by step tutorial for building Heart Boxes, both single and double hearts.

Rick made a small modification to the standard tractor design.   This will improve the build time for each tractor.   The tractors will be given away at the upcoming Woodworking Show on April 22, 2023 at the Knecht Home Center to kids, as well as at Toy Distribution in December.

Construction details on building cup and ball games and ring toss games were discussed.  Dave Maude has volunteered to look at the current design and try making a group of toy games for the 2023 toy program.  Dave is also checking to see if he can use the hex shaped pieces from Magnum Enterprises to make Tops.

Rick is working on 100 mini helos, xx airplanes, and xx tractors for the 2023 Toy Program, all from 1" poplar.

Toy Workshop (TWS2023-01) 1.14.2023

THE TOY PROGRAM.    The Toy Program effort consists of 5 major phases:

Phase 1:  Tracing

Phase 2:  Cutting toys to shape

Phase 3:  Milling - routering, drilling, machine sanding

Phase 4:  Finish - sealer coat - sanding - spray - sanding

    Phase 5:  Wheel installations

Preparation for TWS - Wood Stock

A large pallet of 2" x12" x14 " scrap cutoffs was donated to us by Forest Products on Thursday.  Darwin brought it from Forest Products to Magnum Enterprises.   Rick picked it up from Magnum Enterprises and brought it to our Wood Shop.  The pallet was estimated to hold about 500 pieces.

Templates are prepared and ready for tracing activity.

We held our first Toy Workshop (TWS) for 2023 on Saturday January 14, 2023, from 9 to 11:30 am.  This was held at the Wood Shop at 910 Wood Ave in Rapid City.  The shop is in the basement of the annex to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.

The attendees at today's workshop (17) included John, Nick, Harley, Bob, Kathie, Rick, Grant, Rollie, Lon, Ken, Dennis, Russ,  Tony, Paul,  Darwin, Lauree and Don.

We are starting a new year of Toy Making, and therefore are starting with Phase 1 - Tracing.  So today's plan was to trace Toy Patterns onto 2" thick wood, then cut the traced toys into individual pieces with the miter saw or the band saw. Lastly we put all toys of one kind into a box, and moved the boxes to the Work In Progress (WIP) store room.  Next workshop, we can begin working on the next phases:  Cutting and Milling.

We moved ahead to Phase 2 for Love bugs that had been traced last month by cutting them to shape using the scrollsaw.

Our goal for 2023 is to build about 3,000 toys to donate to organizations who work with kids in South Dakota.

Results of Today's Toymaking Efforts:
Patterns traced:  17
Total toys traced:  441

More to come:  we will be tracing for the next four workshops, as well as starting the cutting and milling. That is, we will start phase 2 - 3 - 4 next time on the toys traced today.

Paul is our official "peg painter".  So today, Bob gave Paul 6 bags of axle pegs for painting.  Each bag holds 1,000 pegs.  The peg color for 2023 will be RED.  Samples are in work.
