OUTLINE - with spots for Photos

The Rapid City Woodworkers Association (RCWA) shared their skills and showed finished art products during their 14th annual Woodworking Show. It was held Saturday April 23, 2022, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Knecht Home Center at 320 West Boulevard in Rapid City. The event was free to the public.

The show featured displays of fine woodworking projects by individual members. The theme for the show was “Puzzles and Games”.  The group showed collections of Old Tools and game tables for kids and adults including marble games, kangaroo races, basketball games, giant and medium JENGA games, and a Love Bug/Puzzle Car race track.  There were also live demonstrations of wood turning, scroll sawing, toy-making, and computer controlled routers.  Visitors to the show were given the opportunity to receive the free monthly club newsletter as well as lots of door prizes of handcrafted wooden items made by members. In addition, a raffle and silent auction was held for several wooden items. Proceeds from the show will be used to buy supplies for the RCWA’s Toy Making Program for less fortunate children in the Black Hills.

Woodworking demonstrations included several projects with explanations of how to make wooden toys, how to turn bowls, hammers, pens and tops on a lathe, and using a scroll saw to make name signs, bowls, vases, and other fretwork items. Interested children received their individual names cut from ¾” pine wood to take home. Kids colored their own puzzle cars or love bugs, members added wheels, and then the kids tested their new toys on the race track.  Members of the RCWA shared tips and advice as well as swapped ideas for techniques and projects from those attending the show.

Many thanks to Rick Weisbeck and all of his supporters at Knecht Home Center at 320 West Boulevard near the intersection of Omaha and West Boulevard in Rapid City, SD.  Photos of the group’s activities can be seen at www.rapidcitywoodworkers.com, under the RCWA blog

Toy Workshop (TWS2022-06) 4.9.2022

Toy Workshop (TWS2022-06) 4-9-2022

We held our 6th Toy Workshop (TWS) for 2022 on Saturday April 9, 2022, from 9 to noon.  This was at the Wood Shop at 910 Wood Ave in Rapid City.  The shop is in the basement of the annex to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.

Some of the attendees at today's workshop (17) included Nick, Grant, Al, Ken, Rick, Harley, Mary G, Russ Stueckrath, Bob, Kathie, Jerry, Patsy, Jim, Gary Graves, Frank, Rollie, and Ed Pike.

We continued with the next phase of toymaking today as we continued drilling axle holes, drilling windows using Forstner bits, cutting toys to rough shape, sanding and routering.  There were three people cutting on scrollsaws, and one on the bandsaw.  There was handsanding of puzzle cars in preparation for the Wood Show, as well as handsanding blocks for block bags.  We had extra sanders without operators.  We tested the TRITON oscillating belt sander as well.

Scroll Saw Special Interest Group (SS SIG) 3.17.2022

The special interest group (SIG) focusing on Scroll Sawing is held at Rick Weisbeck’s shop on the third Thursday of each month.  All members are welcome to attend these “scroll saw focused” get-togethers.

A small group of RCWA members attended the March meeting of the Scroll Saw Special Interest Group (SS SIG) at Rick's Shop on Thursday March 17, 2022.

The goal for the evening was to finish up the puzzle cars to be given away at the Woodworking Show on 23 April 2022 at the Knecht Home Center.  We will give each kid a toy to color,  we will add wheels, and then the kids may race them down our 8' long race track.

This year's theme is "Puzzles and Games".  In keeping with the theme, a toy was designed just for the show.  The toy picked is a puzzle car based on a toy car featured in the most recent Scrollsaw Magazine.  Jerry Hood designed the toy car while vacationing in Florida.  Jerry made a group of these toys in Florida.  At this SIG, we finished up the remaining portion of the cars by rounding over the edges and sanding, ready for the WW Show.
