Toy Workshop (TWS2023-03) 2.11.2023

We held our third Toy Workshop (TWS) for 2023 on Saturday February 11, 2023, from 9 am to 12.  This was held at the Wood Shop at 910 Wood Ave in Rapid City.  The shop is in the basement of the annex to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.  This was a regularly scheduled Rapid City Woodworkers Association (RCWA) workshop and held on the second Saturday of the month.

The attendees at today's workshop (22) included Nick, Harley, John, Julian, Bob, Kathie, Rick, Grant, Ken, Rollie, Keith, Lon, Dennis, Russ, Darwin, Lauree, Al, Tony, Stu, Gary G, Ed, and Don.

We finished tracing most of the patterns requiring 2" thick material today.  Then we moved on to tracing toys on 1" poplar stock.  Following up, we then cut the traced toys into individual pieces with the miter saw or the band saw. Lastly, we put all toys of one kind into a box, labeled the box with an Assembly History Tag (AHT) to track the progress of the work on that toy,  and moved the boxes to the Work In Progress (WIP) store room.  We also did more cutting and drilling of axle holes and windows in toys.

Behind the Scenes:

Rick brought in 150 airplane fuselages to be sanded.  Stu brought in ladders for firetrucks cut with his CNC router.  Keith brought in Hippos ready for initial sanding.  The sanding group sanded Hippos, airplanes, and ladders.  These items are now ready for sealing with shellac.

The tracing groups traced several "new" toys on 1" poplar,  plus a new toy tanker on 2" stock.  The milling group drilled windows and axle holes on toys from the Work In Progress store room.  Bob prepared patterns of critters to be traced on 3/4" pine stock at the next toy workshop.

Rick and Ken assembled Storage Shelves #11 and #12.  Bob cut the wood to length during the week.  The shelves were then moved into position between two posts in the workshop.
