Preparation of Wood for Toy Program 2-21-2020

Members of the "Planing Committee" gathered at Danny and Mary's RV Barn this morning to load a few tons of wood in trucks.  Destination:  Bob's shop to prepare wood (for toys) that has been donated to the RCWA from various businesses and individuals in the Black Hills community.

We had been preparing for this adventure for some time using the group's planer.  Two weeks ago, Rick and Bob designed and built a shavings collector to allow a dust collector to be attached to the planer.  Last evening, the SS SIG built one more accessory to attach the hose to the dust collector.

This morning, I did the hookup and test.  All seemed to work well, except the planer itself had several large nicks in the blades.  So several members worked together to install new blades (3) on the planer.  With new blades, the planer worked extremely well.  In fact so well that the dust collector couldn't keep up with the amount of shavings being made.

After several attempts to modify the dust collection technique,  it was decided to remove the dust collector, and let the shavings fly,  and then clean up with a broom after done.  This worked fine, and we filled about seven 32 gallon garbage bags with pine wood shavings.

Kathie prepared a nice lunch complete with vegetable - beef soup, clover leaf rolls, cheese and crackers and finally fresh cookies!

So after several hours of planing, we had filled two trucks with wood to be used at the toy workshop planned for Saturday Feb 22, 2020.

Attendees included Rick, Danny, Ken, Rollie, Jerry and Bob.
