Community Event 7.16.2022 5K Walk Little Black Hills Battles

With temperatures in the high 90's, several members of the RCWA gathered at Old Story Book Island Park today to support the Little Black Hills Battles at Monument Pediatrics.  This is a  fundraiser to assist young people and their parents battling diseases at Monument Pediatrics.

Attendees included Rick, Patsy, Jerry, Stu, Bob, Kathie, Matt, Mary G, Lauree and Darwin.

Giraffes were designed and tested by Jerry.  The giraffes were traced by Jerry on 1" poplar.  Some (16) were cut at the SS SIG in June.  The rest were cut and routered by Jerry.  Thanks Jerry!

Patsy, Kathie and Matt assisted the little folks with the coloring of giraffes or vans.  Jerry and Stu glued and installed wheels.  Lauree, Darwin and Mary G helped the little folks test out and race their vehicles of choice.  Over 39 giraffes were colored by kids of all ages ranging from a few months to teens.  Ten vans were colored, wheeled and raced.  Many parents and lots of kids were very excited about the wooden toys today!

We were asked by the coordinator of the event to please come again next year!

Race Car Build Assistance at Club for Boys 7.11.2022 thru 7.14.2022

The race cars were traced and cut from 2x4's by members of the Rapid City Woodworkers back in 2021.  Wheels (2") were donated to the project this year.  Dowels for axles (1/4") were provided by the CFB.  The RCWA provided the leadership to guide a group of 80 boys thru the steps needed to build and finalize cars for the big races planned for the following week.

Members of the Rapid City Woodworkers Association assisted boys at the Club for Boys this week with car building projects for the Pinewood Derby .

Mark Kline made a guest appearance today 7.14.2022 to share some of his tips for improving downhill racing performance.  Several boys implemented these tips in their cars.  Mark's Tips included several ways to reduce friction in the rolling parts of the cars.

Monday, Ron, Rick, Jerry, Bob and Kathie came to prepare parts, establish the working process and get things rolling.  Tuesday, Rick, Al, Jerry, and Stu, came to support the boys.  On Wednesday,  Jerry, Patsy, Al, Stu, Rick, and Bob came.  Jerry, Stu, Bob and Kathie came to assist on Thursday.

CFB member Dalton (aka the Recruiter) worked with the RCWA guys to hunt down / drum up interested boys to participate in the race car project.

Toy Workshop (TWS2022-11) 7.9.2022

We held our 11th Toy Workshop (TWS) for 2022 on Saturday July 9, 2022, from 9 to noon.  This was held at the Wood Shop at 910 Wood Ave in Rapid City.  The shop is in the basement of the annex to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.

The attendees at today's workshop (18) included Grant, Ken, Harley, Bob, Kathie, Jerry, Patsy, Bel, Jim Burk, Julian, John, Lon, Denni, Rollie, Norma, Mary G, Nick, and Rick.

Ken and Lon brought in boxes of toys they cut, sanded, and drilled in their home workshops.

Today we drilled rotor/axle holes, drilling holes for strings in wooden balls, tracing critters on 1" poplar,  and cutting toys to rough shape.  There were three people cutting on scrollsaws, and one on the bandsaw.  There was three members handsanding 2 boxes of toys that had been sealed with shellac.  Wheels were installed on 42 toys plus on 118 Love Bugs.    There was power sanding and round over routering under the canopy outside in 100 + degree weather.

Patsy brought in her embroidery machine and stitched members names on ACE aprons for use in the Toy Workshops.

Several members took home traced toys to work on at home shops.  This included Keith Brinks, Lon and Ken.

At the end of the day, there were 3 boxes of toys ready to be sealed and two boxes ready to finish sprayed.  There were  42 toys sporting the new orange pegs selected for all 2022 toys, and 118 Love Bugs with blue pegs.  Of these, 50 Love Bugs were packed up and delivered by Jerry Hood to the Rapid City Fire Department.

We did some housekeeping at the previous workshop by moving all Work in Progress (WIP) toys to the room adjacent to our current tool store room.  Already we are seeing a major reduction in the log jambs in the tool storage room.
