RCWA Meeting Minutes

Introductions/ New Members:

 Welcome to Joseph Allen as a new member. 

Treasurer’s Report: 

RCWA $175 collected for dues.  First United Methodist Church, Irwin, PA madeadonation of $422 to RCWA.   Rick was reimbursed $100 for 4 gallons of poly.  We earned $0.93 interest in the workshop account and $0.02 in the savings accounts.  Current balances follow.

 Pinewood Derby

 RCWA will again help scouts with Pinewood Derby car preps April 12 5:30-8:00, and April 13 9:00-11:00 on Saturday.  Helpers include Rick, Cori, Tony, Stu.

Special Interest Groups

 Next Scroll Saw SIG is scheduled for April 18 at Rick Weisbeck’s home (6704 Kimberly Drive, Blackhawk) from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Nativity scene is cut and the group will work on final finishing touches for the show.

Turning SIG is scheduled for April 24 1:00-3:00 at Brown’s home (2878 Spotted Fawn Lane, Rapid City).

General Meeting

Next general meeting will be May 13, 2024 at 7:00 p.m.  Note that we are returning to Monday evenings for the summer operations.  Kathy will bring refreshments.


Other Topics

Tool sale will be June 15.

Cori Weisbeck has set up a feedback mechanism for community requests to connect members with community members’ making requests for assistance, etc.  Please contact Cori to provide skill sets. A column has been added to the member rosters to include skill sets as well.

Black Hills Battles is scheduled for Sept. 14 at old Story Book Island.  Stu will have 60 giraffes ready for the event. 

Nick and Rick loaded two pickup loads of wood, tools, and cabinets at an auction, which are currently stored at Nick’s house.  Nick is currently organizing and selling some of these items through ebay for the club. 

A widow of a wood carver has material and tools she would like to give away to the woodcarvers group.  Bob is trying to connect her with the woodcarvers’ group. 

Wood Show

The Wood Show is set for the third Saturday in April (April 20).  The theme is Christmas in April.  Set up is scheduled after 4:00 p.m. on Friday April 19.  If you can’t be there on Friday, let Rick know so we can reserve a space for you.  Remember to bring your name tag for your display area. 

We will meet Friday at noon at the church shop to load the trailer.  The trailer will be unloaded after the show on Sunday at a time TBD. 

Knecht’s will provide 24 tables.  Make sure there is a tablecloth on the table before you set up your display.

Show runs from 9:00 to 4:00. 

For the kids area, Bob will bring marble game as well as the race track, and basketball games.  Rick will bring Jenga.  Toy making needs a few more volunteers.  Please help out in this area if you have some spare time during the day. 

We will a display honoring Rollie which feature pictures, a few of his toys, and the wooden eagle.  Rick made a memory plaque for Rollie. 

Toy stands are downstairs and will be loaded on Friday.  Jim Burk will again prepare a slide show of club activities.  Cori will provide the television.    

Bob will locate and bring the reporter notebooks to the show. 

Posters have all gone out.  Mary sent notices to SDPBR, Journal, and KOTA. A Black Hills TV crew came to last toy workshop and indicated a video would be posted the Monday prior to the show.  Cori posted notices to Facebook. 

Tony will bring cash box and change for the show. 

Tickets and sign-up sheets for the newsletter are downstairs and will be available for the show. 

Door Prizes – Darwin will have two tic tac toe gqmes.   Stu will  bring 6 bottle stoppers.  Jerry and other group members will bring ornaments to hang on the tree as part of the door prizes.  Jerry will also bring a few golf balls trapped in a box.  Jerry will bring in Christmas tree that we have at the Christmas party for hanging ornaments. 

Al Oines is managing the raffle items and has 8 raffle boxes.  Items:  Rick will have a doll cradle with quilt.  Al will have a pepper grinder (replaced with a boxelder burl bowl).  The club still has 2 turtle banks.  Harley will bring 2 bird houses.  Rick has a tree with replaceable ornaments.  And, Jerry has a Noel sign.  Raffle closes at 3:30. 

Magazines will be available at a table for swap.

Silent Auction coordinators will be Patsy and Cori.  Silent auction closes at 3:00.    Send a picture to Cori along with a minimum bid and a buy it now bid.  Keith will have a cribbage board.  Harley will have a bird house.  Al will have a turned item.  Rick will have a cradle.  Patsy will have a gift basket.  Candle holder for Jerry.  Stu will have inside out ornament and vase with owl.  Dave will have 3 tops.  Bob will put a package toys together.  Nativity set will be on Silent Auction. 

Cori had two new 4x6 banners made.  They will be hung on her truck for advertising the day of the show.

Rick will have CNC demo and the gatlin gun demo.

Cori and Bob coordinated logistical items to bring that are necessary for show.  Items include blue tape, computer, mouse, printer, and adhesive spray.

Cabinet display is currently at Knecht’s and has been updated with a few new toys. 

Lunch will be available for RCWA members and Knect employees in the contractor sales area at Knecht’s.  Kathy and Patsy will coordinate and provide food.  They will need 2 tables for set up.  Member donations to offset food costs are welcome.

Rick Weisbeck reported he is making approx. 50 racing sleighs and Keith Brink is making a Santa driver to be installed in each one (see show and tell picture for example).

Lon Gose will bring old tools and tool display.

A friendly reminder that this is not a sale.  It is only a show.   We cannot sell items within Knecht’s during the show without running into legal problems with sales tax. 

Please commit to stay until 4:00 on Saturday. 

Toy program

Next Toy Workshop will be Saturday, April 13, 2024.

Jerry Hood is worked on a new toy motor boat while in Florida.

All toys, have been traced and we are hoping the weather will allow sanding and routing of toys outside.   

If you know someone who wants toys, we have an application for toys on the RCWA website. 

Show and Tell

Rick brought in a plaque displaying the theme for this year’s show as well as a Christmas tree with interchangeable ornaments.  


 

                  Rick also brought in a memorial plaque commemorating Rollie.  He will be missed.  We will have a memory table at the WW Show. 

                

                Jim Burk always has a number of items he has been working on with laser engraving.

WT SIG. 3.27.2024


The Wood Turning Special Interest Group (WT SIG) was held on Mar 27, 2024.

All RCWA members and guests are welcome to attend.  It is on the calendar for the last Wednesday of each month at 1 pm. It is held in Jim and Maggie’s Shop at 2879 Spotted Fawn Lane, Rapid City, SD 57702.

Thank you to Maggie and Jim for hosting and preparing today's Woodturning SIG.

Lon, Stu, Dave, Al, Maggie, Jim Brown, Ken, Rick, Michael,  Jerry and others.

More discussion was held about what the Turner's would be demonstrating and giving away at the upcoming April 20th Wood Show at Knecht Home Center in Rapid City.  This is our sixteenth annual show.

There was lots of Show and Tell items shown and discussed along with the techniques used to make them.

TOY WORKSHOP (TWS2024-06). 3.23.2024

We held our sixth Toy Workshop (TWS) for 2024 on Saturday March 23, 2024, from 9:00 to 12:00 am.  This was held at the Wood Shop at 910 Wood Ave in Rapid City.  The shop is in the basement of the annex to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.

It was a cool day with 25 Degrees at game time, going up to 30 degrees.  All the work was done indoors.  

The attendees at today's workshop (16) included Harley, Julian, Keith, Stu, Lon, Ken, Ed, Rick, Lauree, Darwin, Al, Nick, Don, Tony, Jerry and Patsy.

Today, we finished all the simple helos (Toy 17.9) and airplanes (Toy 19.1).  Dave Maude brought in 140 Tops (Toy 14.3) ready for inventory.  Ed brought in two boxes of toys cut and ready for sanding, routering, etc.  Ed also took a couple of boxes of blanks home to work. Activities today putting wheels and wings on completed airplane fuselages, installing rotors on simple helos, drilling windows and axle holes in toys, sanding critters, and cutting toys to shape on the scroll saw.

Scroll Saw SIG (3.21.2024)

 

The ScrollSaw Special Interest Group (SS SIG) was held today from 1 pm to 3 pm at Rick's shop in Black Hawk.  Al , Ken, Jerry and Rick attended the SIG today. They cut out 36 gave away sleighs for the April WW show.

Toy Workshop (TWS2024-05) and General Meeting (3.9.2024)

We held our fifth Toy Workshop (TWS) for 2024 on Saturday March 9, 2024, from 8:30 to 11:00 am.  This was held at the Wood Shop at 910 Wood Ave in Rapid City.  The shop is in the basement of the annex to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.  The March 2024 General Meeting was held from 11:00 am to noon. 

We have all the cars (2x4 stock) traced, including the love bugs. Darwin and Tony cut some toys to shape on scroll saws.  Jim Brown drilled axle holes.  Al, Roy, and Russ worked on airplanes -- 50 are completed and inventoried. Rick repaired the bandsaw.

The attendees at today's workshop (15) included Harley, Julian, Keith, Stu, Lon, Rick, Lauree, Darwin, Al, Grant, Jim Brown, Russ, Tony, Mary Jo, and Roy.

Cori, Don, Mary C and Dave Maude joined us for the meeting at 11 am.

Discussion for better management of the Silent Auction was held. In the past, more items were brought than originally planned, which is a good thing, but planning in advance would make management easier.

Discussion on the Lathe demo was held. Dave Maude suggested that a focused approach to items being turned would make the set-up process easier. It was also suggested, since only one lathe is on site, that a schedule is made for the turning demos and the person demonstrating.

Mary Coffin has identified areas for posters to be hung first or second week in April. Please take a stack if you willing to help distribute. Mary Coffin will do the tri-fold as well as send an announcement to RCJ. Cori will do Craig’s list and facebook. Mary will contact the tv station for coverage. Cori and Rick will make CNC signs for indoor use. Maybe we make sandwich boards and 2-3 hangar flags for outdoor use. Cori showed a banner example that can be purchased for around $40.

We will continue to do door prizes which will be held every 15 minutes or so. The club is looking for additional items for door prizes. Al will coordinate raffle. Need 8 raffle prizes. Lauree and Darwin, tic tac toe game for raffle. Stu will contribute a half dozen wine stoppers for either the raffle or door prizes. Rick will donate a cradle and Kathy a quilt for the raffle.

Patsy and Cori will coordinate silent auction. Nick will have a cutting board. Stu will donate an inside-out ornament with stand and a bowl or vase of some sort. The Nativity set will be donated by Scroll Saw SIG group. We will try to get a complete list of items for both the raffle and the silent auction at the April meeting.

Scroll saw demonstrations: let us know who is interested in doing scroll saw demonstrations.

Rick will bring his CNC and gattling gun.

Patsy, Kathy, and Mary Jo will coordinate lunches. Please bring some $$ for lunch donations next meeting.
